The best thing about out-of-town volleyball tournaments…

Is the drinking.

Oh, you thought I might say the chance to match up against opponents from other states like Hawaii and Idaho and Oregon (where, apparently, the parents don’t switch sides between sets – ummm, they’re not in college yet). Or the exciting rallies during a close match. An opportunity for my kid’s team to snag a set of championship medals.

No. Multi-day, out-of-town tournaments means as much volleyball as can be crammed into a 60-hour period, but without having to do any driving whatsoever. If that’s not cause for a little dranky-drank, I don’t know what is.

And if watching my daughter play is the second best thing about these events, then getting my grub on is a close third – so close it often overlaps or beats out completely the volleyball.

Depending on the schedule, it’s possible to have a couple hour break between matches, providing ample time for Best Thing #1 and #3/sometimes #2. This happened recently at the Las Vegas Classic at Mandalay Bay, home to Border Grill of Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger fame. My volleymom pal Fran and I were set to order a pair of entrees while awaiting our daughters’ next match when our server asked if we’d be ordering off the lunch or brunch menu.

Brunch menu?

And turning over the sheet of printed cardstock in front of me, there it was: a long list of late-morning delights to be had – as many plates as we wanted for a sweet price of $34.99. Or something like that.

So we drank. (I had the brunch margarita.)

And then we ate.
Yucatan eggs benedict.
Chilaquiles.
Churro tots.
Chicken and waffles.
Peruvian shrimp and grits.
Green corn tamales.

It was all so good, my number #3/sometimes #2 almost became my #1.

Almost. Drinking will always reign supreme (that brunch margarita was legit yum).
