Tasty Places :: Carson Kitchen

Sometimes, you just need to leave The Strip.

Despite the glitz, the fab, the fun to be found just steps away in any direction along Vegas’ high rise and neon packed LV Boulevard, there is plenty trouble to get yourself into all over Sin City. And good food to eat, like a spot found just north of The Strip around the corner from fabulous Fremont Street. Downtown. Not too far at all.

Here’s where you’ll find Carson Kitchen, a bite-sized nugget that serves up hearty dishes and friendly service. And a nice menu of cocktails. And a girl needed a drank after being on the road for seven hours in a rush to get my kid to an evening volleyball event a couple weeks ago. If I hadn’t needed to be up for yet another volleyball event at 8:00 am the next morning, it would have been two dranks. Maybe even four with Carson Kitchen’s gutsy and unique assortment of concoctions.

Word to the wise for Carson Kitchen – arrive hungry. There’s lots to do. Especially if you’re like me and into macaroni and cheese. Here, I discovered some of the tastiest, dreamiest mac and cheese of my life. It sang a sharp and sassy tune, one that I would gladly put on repeat if I had room for it in my belly. But there were other things that needed to get in. Like Carson Kitchen’s Crispy Chicken Skins, the plate that started things off for the husband and me that particular evening. When dredged through a bit of the smoked honey served alongside, these crispy morsels proved addicting.

Still, I couldn’t get too caught up with the skins and the mac and the drank (I ordered the sangria), as there was an entrée in my future. I had my eye on their Secret Sunday Chicken (a supposed antidote for those craving Chick-Fil-A on Sundays), but once the husband chose that for himself, I went with the jerk turkey burger served with tater tots. These weren’t any old Ore Ida tots from my childhood (which were pretty dope, I can admit). The Carson Kitchen tots were super fluffy, supremely crisped and seasoned bites of scrumptiousness. And yes, there was a burger, but sadly, it got very little of my attention because I was so full from all that came before it.

My biggest regret was not having booked a hotel room with a fridge – I brought home my leftovers (a bit of everything that I ordered) with hopes of late night crispy-cheesy-tater snacking. Instead, I conked out in the cozy hotel bed after seven minutes or so, my doggy bag left for the cleaning staff to dispose of the next day. A shame. But at least there were chicken skin wishes and tater tot dreams.

Also…
This place gets kudos for:
1. A chatty, witty staff, both front of the house and kitchen – from our seats at the counter as the evening’s final party, we got ample time with both.
2. Its receipt billfold, a book where diners can leave notes of any and all kind before parting. I tatted a page up with dianderthal.com. I am not responsible for the drawing on page 122.
