Sleepaway :: The Curtis in Denver

I didn’t know exactly what I’d get after making a three-night reservation for The Curtis in Denver, but rested assured in the fact that there’d be cookies (it’s a Doubletree – you may have read before about how I love a Doubletree) and, as I’d opted for one of their pop culture themed rooms, plenty of fun.

It’s a story you’ve heard before: Out of town club volleyball tournament for my kid, big plans for eating and drinking and eating some more. This requires nothing but a spot to take some zzzs and shower. While ecstatic about being whisked away to a faraway land (for someone who hasn’t yet traveled internationally, Denver counts as far and away), the capricious and demanding tournament schedule keeps me away from my hotels for these trips. Yet the Curtis (named for the street on which it sits, right at 14th near the Colorado Convention Center) is so inviting and cheeky and amusing that you actually want a reason to hang out in the lobby and venture its floors.

I did do a little venturing indeed, checking out the themed floors to see just how cooky cool The Curtis could be. Very, was what I found. The 8th floor is dedicated to science fiction (and heavily Star Warsed). And the theme for floor #14 is all about television. And, as you may have guessed, the 13th floor is all things horror – I don’t think I would have survived three days on number 13 (I barely could stand to walk its halls for three minutes) but it’s ripe for those who enjoy slasher flicks and creepy stuff. And my floor put the F in fabulous, it being the Hair floor, the voice of Marge Simpson telling visitors to watch their hair upon exiting when the elevator doors parted. Our room (the husband came with) fittingly came festooned with wigs and images of big-haired Barbies.

Besides the hotel place and space, the staff was just about as friendly as you can get (though I found the entire city of Denver to be incredibly hospitable). We were treated well even before check-in via text message with an ask of anything we might need. A little big thing.

So it’s not simply that I’m a creature of habit that I will seek out the Curtis the next time I venture east to Denver. And even though I sank into the slick vibe of another swanky sweet hotel a couple-few blocks away after brunch while visiting, The Curtis will be my choice because I liked it. I liked it a lot.

And there were cookies.

*Sidenote: From my room at The Curtis, I could see the Denver Performing Arts Complex where (sigh)…Hamilton was playing. I did heavily consider forking out $241 to ditch volleyball on Saturday night in exchange for a balcony seat. I didn’t buy it. But if I’d won that Hamilton lottery I’d entered, this story might have ended differently.
