Tasty Places :: The District

I went to Vegas and lost. More accurately, I went to Vegas and didn’t gain. Weight, that is. My plan had been to put on at least a couple-few pounds with some flagrant eating and cocktailing over my long-weekend stay while in town for – you guessed it – club volleyball. But sometimes, life gives you other plans.  Which is what happened to me. Things occurred that kept me in my hotel room most of my down time then in the streets and on the strip. Still, I managed to get to two of the 25 restaurants on my richly curated list (I tend to over-plan). La La Noodle (visited twice, and bloggied about in another post) was one. And District (in my favorite foodie hotel, The Cosmopolitan), the other – the first place I hit up after landing at McCarran airport. In search of breakfast, my youngest and I picked District over neighboring Egg Slut because a) I had Egg Slut my last trip to Vegas and, b) District is shiny and new, one of the stalls at Cosmo’s freshly-launched Block 16 Urban Food Hall and, c) District’s line was longer. Plus, District is known for its donuts, which I could not pass up (especially with my weight gain quest). So District it was.

For breakfast, District offers donuts (as I mentioned), biscuits and biscuit sandwiches, croque-nuts (as in Monte Cristos and Croque Madames), and kolaches. In a safe rather than adventurous spirit, I chose the scrambled egg and cheese biscuit with turkey sausage along with a red velvet donut. My biscuit did what it needed to do – made a mess on my plate with its scrumptious cheesiness. The biscuit itself was just bready enough – a touch too flaky to pick up the sandwich and hold, but not over-crumbly. I could have used a little more egg and cheese for the bread, but my proportion standards are ridiculously high – I can be hard to fully please. Still, I’d surely go back again to enjoy one of these – next time, though, with a mimosa.

Later (because my belly’s only so big…on the inside), I dug into my donut, topped with some of the best frosting I’ve ever tasted. It was quite a treat. I enjoyed it as a dessert, and I think it’s more suited for one than a breakfast item. But, with a mimosa, anything is possible. Maybe I’ll try that as well.

So it’s a yes to District, and to Block 16 (on my unfinished list was Block’s Hattie B’s hot chicken and some Pok Pok wings), and always to The Cosmopolitan (my hotel boo). And to Vegas. And to ice cream.

I know this post had nothing to do with ice cream, but it’s always a yes to ice cream. Just thought you should know that.

District: Donuts. Sliders. Brew can be found in The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas
