Eating Austin, Part II

I survived the chains, the fast food joints, the places screaming “Eat Here – This Is Genuine Texas Grub!” and, finally, I was ready to savor, to be merry, to be a glutton. This is what I ate.

From Torchy’s Tacos…

Finally!

Their Street Corn was my favorite dish of my entire trip – with ancho aioli, queso fresco, cilantro, and New Mexico red chile powder, it was a succulent, sumptuous treat. Hearty and cream, with a kick.

The Trailer Park taco was quite brilliant, with fried chicken, green chiles, lettuce, pico de gallo, and cheese. Good crunch; both tangy and cheesy.

So I accidentally ordered the Mr. Pink taco (by the way, I’m glad it’s called Mr. and not Mrs. – am I the only one whose mind always goes there?), filled with Ahi tuna, cabbage fresca, cilantro, queso fresco, and chipotle sauce. I MEANT to order their blackened salmon taco, called Mr. Orange. I guess I had some sort of color confusion. It was actually a nice mix of flavors – I just couldn’t get past the fish (which at the time I thought was salmon) being undercooked. I would have eaten more had I realized my mistake, but was too full by the time I put two and two together. Just glad I didn’t go to the counter and complain about my undercooked salmon.

There was also Hey Cupcake!

Hey Cupcake Trailer

Located on a block of food trailers on S. Congress Avenue, I stood in line under the 100° sun to try out Hey Cupcake! Boring as I always am, I tried the red velvet, which turned out to be moist and full of that rich, not-quite-chocalate taste I so love. It was magical.

So parts my food fantasy came to life. For everything else, I’ll just have to wait until my next Austin trip. I’ll have to take my LWD instead.
